The Future

Today Carmen came home from school and excitedly showed me this picture.  "This is the future." Apparently the future has a blue sky with lots of shooting stars, green grass and two-legged people (with no arms) who sleep in triangular-ish shaped beds.  According to Carmen, the shapes above the people are beds.  Hmmm...the future looks like an interesting place!

Scissors

Lately, this one is all about scissors.  There was no getting around it.  Its all he wants to do.  He cuts and cuts and cuts paper.  I can't tell you how much construction paper we go through on a daily basis.  And, if the paper has already been snipped, forget it, he refuses to use it.  Only fresh, new paper will do.  I finally got smart and pulled out the grocery ads, recent phone book delivered to our door step, retail magazines, and junk mail.  He was happy with the change for a few minutes, but after plowing through a plethora of this paper, he was back to the construction paper.  Just another phase we're waiting for him to grow out of.  In the meantime, it's back to having our recycle chock full of his cutting masterpieces.

Baseball & Biking

Today it felt a touch like Spring.  Crazy, it's January and it's close to 60 degrees.  We took full advantage and headed to the park.  The kids biked, rode their scooters, played baseball and enjoyed running around in light layers, no bulky jackets, hats or mittens required.  Looking forward to many more fun-filled days outside.

Activities

Lately our days have been filled with lots and lots of activities.  Just a sign of things to come for many, many years I'm sure.  What we think is busy now is just a taste of what's in store.  Right now...

Carmen is doing gymnastics.  In true Carmen style she started off a little rocky but she's coming around.  A new leotard with matching 'crazy' shorts helped make it a bit better and the fact that her friend Maci is in the class too certainly helps.  Carmen opts-out of the warm-up (apparently watching the other kids participate is preferable), she does enjoy walking the small balance beam, doing the obstacle course (her way of course, not necessarily the way the coach intended), trying to figure out how to do a forward roll and jumping in the foam pit.  Her favorite part of the 45 minute class is getting her stamp at the end.

Both Max and Carmen are in soccer.  Different classes but sometimes they let Carmen participate in Max's class since she is a pro (or at least has done the class before).  Max enjoys the 'big' kicks and scoring goals (he's also a big fan of watching the big kids practice baseball on the other side of the gym) and of course is happy for a water break.  He's less interested in the 'little' kicks (a.k.a dribbling) and doesn't understand why he's not supposed to use his hands to stop the ball.  Carmen is getting pretty good, now stays on her feet most of the time and isn't shy anymore.  She enjoys the team cheer and collecting her stamp at the end of class.  Maybe we have her in all of these activities for the stamps!

Carmen is also doing ballet.  This is her second session so at least she knows what to expect.  She continues to be a little bit shy and isn't a big fan of the warm-up exercises.  Do you see a theme forming here?  She gets into the class about 10 minutes in.  She adores the teacher and is her little shadow.  She does not like anything that has to do with a partner and flat out refuses to hold hands with anyone but the teacher despite how many talks we have.  She is learning how to do ballerina runs, how to point her toes and enjoys dancing to the princess music.  There is recital coming up in Spring.  We'll see what unfolds and if our Carmen will be up for dancing in-front of people or entertaining the idea of working with a classmate.  Perhaps the sparkly costume will convince her.  Only time will tell.

Confession

Last week the kids couldn't stop talking about wanting gummy bears.  Not sure why or how they got on a gummy bear kick, but since it's one of my favorite treats, I bought them each a bag.  They each had a small handful and then I tucked the bags away in the cupboard and they promptly forgot about them.  I however did not forget about the Haribo bears and have been sneaking a few here and there over the last few days.  Last night I was working late and decided a few gummy bears were in order.  Well, I ended up consuming every single one...!  Sigh.

Productive

Today was just one of those days to get stuff done.  Nothing we had to do and no where we had to be.  I always love feeling productive and today so far...

A walk with a friend
Mail gone through, bills paid
Christmas lights finally down and put away
Since the ladder was out, Jimmy washed the outside windows and skylights
Kids went down for naps
Three loads of laundry done, folded and put away
Vacuumed the car out--I'm sure the bag is full.  So many crumbs, wrappers, stickers, rocks and leaves were sucked up.
It's only late afternoon so we'll see what else we can tackle.

We don't have too many of these super productive days so today was a good day.  When mom's happy, everybody is happy!

Pink Sky

Beautiful evening.  Beautiful sunset.  Beautiful sky.

4-Year-Old Check-up

She passed her check-up with flying colors.

Hearing test...check.
Eye chart...check.
Identifying numbers...check.
A little silly with nervous energy...check.  But, I'll take it.  Compared to the 3-year-old visit, this one was a breeze.
A happy mom for a gold-star appointment...check.

The best part, she colored a Doc McStuffins picture for the nurse and doctor.  According to Carmen, they had to share.  The real doctor was impressed and let Carmen hang it up in the office.  She was beaming.

New Beginnings

Today is the beginning of a brand new year.
A happy new year indeed.
A time to reflect, listen and learn.
A time to get organized, let go and enjoy being in the moment.
A time to set goals and turn over new leaves.
A time to live each day and be thankful.

As is family tradition, we washed in money for wishes of a happy, healthy and prosperous year ahead.
