Skipped a Beat

Yesterday was a busy day.  Just a lot of odds and ends, getting stuff done around the house; just one of those days where you feel tired and exhausted.  I was sitting on the couch for a moment and was rubbing my forehead.  Carmen came over, put her hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eye and said "Mom, your my best friend."  I froze; my heart skipped a beat.  It's moments like these that make everything right with the world and make the sleepless nights and the hard work all worth it.  This moment is forever engrained in my mind.  Thank you Carmen James.

8 months

Eight months is shaping up to be just perfect. You are all smiles these days. Now that those six teeth, (all coming in at the same time) have poked through, you are a happy boy once again and aren't afraid to show those pearly whites. You are as active as ever.

Changing your diaper and getting you dressed is like an Olympic event. I feel I should earn a medal every time I complete the task.  You squirm, you roll and do not like to stay still. I've literally caught you by your ankles as you've shimmied off the couch in the middle of a change. Good thing I have fast reflexes.

I've already acknowledged you are in to everything.  You are commando crawling at the speed of light--you move both arms at the same time along with your legs and you shoot forward.  You are fast.  You are going from your tummy to sitting up straight and vice versa in no time at all.  While you have not pulled yourself up to standing on your own quite yet, you are getting close...too close.  You reach to the highest point you can get your hands on and try and stand.  With the legs and thighs you have it won't be long now (I say that in the most loving way that only a mother of a child with monster thighs can).  You are often not wearing pants as you prefer to have your legs free.

You are healthy.  You and Carmen (who is almost two and half) have been wearing the same size diaper for more than a month now. You like to eat, except currently you have an aversion to anything green.  No avocado and no peas for you.  But, anything else you gobble up.  Note: there is usually quite a bit of food left on your cheeks, chin, often times your forehead and on occasion, in your ear.  You are not clean but luckily you love the bath.

You are all boy. You are not dainty, you are certainly not quiet, but you are my little love bug. You like to snuggle and are even more of a mommy's boy than before.  That's still more than ok in my book.  You are adventurous, inquisitive and interested in anything Carmen is doing.  There is no doubt you love your sister.  You smile at her and watch her every move. She is lucky to have you as her 'little' brother and you are lucky she is your big sister.  You will no doubt learn a lot from eachother.

You LOVE shoes. You are obsessed. Regardless of where we put you down in the room, you always make your way over to the shoe basket and help yourself.  You are especially fond of Carmen's rubber boots and chewing on the handles.  I pretend I don't see you licking the bottom of the shoes you pull out when I haven't made it over fast enough to scoop you up or redirect your course.  Just building up your immune system I guess.

You are sleeping well and sleep with your bottom in the air.  You like to play in your crib and talk to yourself in the mornings.  When I come and get you I'm always greeted with the biggest possible smile.  A great way to start the day.  I cherish these moments.

Happy eight wonderful months to my Maxy.  Thank you for your energy, for keeping us on our toes and for being the bright, beautiful boy you are.

Ferry Ride

This weekend we took our annual ferry boat ride to Bainbridge Island.  The weather was perfect, breakfast was tasty (especially the hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles), we enjoyed some play time at the park where Max took his first ride on the swings (see smiles below), we meandered down Winslow Way and poked in a few shops and ended the day with a fudge treat before making our way back to Seattle via the very big boat with cars.

In. To. Everything.

'Dance' Class

Carmen has been in a 'dance' class for the last five weeks.  It's actually more of a tumbling/movement class but she calls it a 'dance' class.  So, dance class it is. We all know our Carmen can dance, move, wiggle, hop, run and entertain...but, for some reason she refused to do ANYTHING for the first four classes.  When the teacher would even look at he, she would put her head down and pout. She wanted to be held; at times she would not even stand on her own two feet.  Carmen, run to the teacher and give her a high-five---not our girl.  All of the other kids would do it, but Carmen stayed firmly planted in place.  Forget the running.  No way was she going to hop like a kangaroo, do the bear crawl, stretch like a butterfly, walk backwards, touch her toes, chase the hula hoop and the list goes on.  She would reluctantly participate in the 'obstacle' course when she felt like it but was always the last one to go and still refused to look the teach in the eye.

Funny thing is that she talked about dance class all week.  We practiced the activities at home and she had no problem doing them in the comfort of her own home but get her into the class with the other kiddos and forget it.

Today was a breakthrough.  After four weeks of minimal participation she did EVERYTHING today!  Hallelujah. She listened, she followed directions and even gave the teacher a high five.  Well, sort of.  She actually would put her nose in her hand like she was a chicken, but we'll take it.  She did the stretching exercises, she did the obstacle course over and over and she even chased after the hula hoop when it was her turn.  She let the teacher put a stamp on her foot and even gave her a hug after class. We'll call it a success.

Just another example of how our stong-willed Carmen will do it when she wants to.  I wonder where she gets that from...

Sunshine = Trike Time

Now that the sun is out, we finally decided to take Carmen's trike outside so she could ride it.  She's had it for almost a year so it was long-over due to get it outside for a test drive.  She of course was excited about her new helmet and wore it for most of the day. When it was time to ride, she proudly put Lamby in her trunk, hopped on her trike and pedaled, pedaled, pedaled down the sidewalk.  She was a quick study (with some heavy reminding to pedal) and it didn't take her long to learn how to steer and stay in the middle.  She loved it and we rode down the sidewalk over and over again. She was enthusiastic about riding down but no so enthusiastic about riding back, as it was slightly up-hill.  Daddy and I took turns carrying the tricycle back while Carmen wanted to run and be chased back to the house.  A great way to tucker her out. Max was just happy to be outside and was proud watching his big sister.  Mommy and Daddy where proud of her too.  Our little girl is growing up.  First haircut, first trike ride--it's all happening a little too quickly.
